Don't miss this!
I was privileged to see what I consider to be the "match of the season". The Times and Directory cup final between B'mouth Spts "S" and New Milton "A". Well it's on again, not the final this time but it should still be a cracker.
Sports captain Louis Coppard will lead his team this Monday at our club. 7.30 Start.....It should be worth a look.
Wilmott Cup and Rosebowl
A good performance from Bournemouth players at the Kingfisher Club in Reading where qualifying rounds for the Wilmott Cup and Rosebowl were played on Saturday the 14th January. Stephen Foster and Hugo Pang represented the Bournemouth and District Association in the men’s competition. Unfortunately a number of our top players were unable to play, due to clashes with coaching courses and other commitments.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Bournemouth Sports moved a step closer to promotion to Division 1 after their matches at Okehampton in Division 2 South-Midlands-West on Sunday 15th January 2012. The team consisting of Hannah Hicks, Tony Clayton, George Downing and Nathan Bingham defeated Fusion III and Woodfield II by the same score of 6-2.
Some superb defensive play by Hannah resulted in her defeating all her opponents 3-0 and she deservedly won both player of the match awards. Hannah’s game strategy and defensive technique have improved significantly in the last year and she must have a good chance of being selected for the Olympic Games in London in the summer.
Waterside 1 star Open "Becky Wins!"
Waterside 1 star Open
Geoff Ware
The birth of a new and exciting Olympic year is now firmly upon us and it was refreshing to witness the young blood and possible future 2020 Olympians carving out their own unique stamp on the Butterfly plywood. A total of seventy young players from eight different counties enjoyed plenty of match competition at yet another very successful Waterside two day Open tournament (another breeding ground for future stars).
The tournament was held over the weekend of the 7th/8th of January, at the popular venue of Waterside’s Testwood College Sports arena in Southampton. The Sunday event reached a nail-biting climax when the top two seeds in the Cadet and Junior boys fought out a couple of pulsating finals.
In the afternoon five Junior Girls contested another round robin competition on Sunday resulting in a title win for Becky Kuzu from Dorset taking the podium top spot, with Amy Blagbrough in second, Kristelle Brook in third while Hannah McErlane and Emma Blanchford gained valuable match experience.
Becky (yet another player from the Bournemouth Sports and Portchester conveyor belt) has a unique but simple approach to table tennis with a close up to the table style of pushing, blocking and counter hitting that proves very effective and just keeps getting the ball back on the table.

Why not come along and support your local team?
Sanja makes No. 1
Our own Sanja Clements is now at No. 1 on the ETTA January ranking list! Hovering in that threatening second position for some time she has now overtaken long time rival Sue Collier to take the coveted number one spot as top ladies veteran in the country. A well deserved position and long may she hold it!
National League
THe Bournemouth Sports team of George Downing, Nathan Bingham, Stephen Foster and Chloe Thomas excelled in the Division 2 South, Midland and West National League matches, played at Ashford, on the weekend of the 10th and 11th December. Creating almost a unique clean sweep they demolished league leaders York Gardens II 8-0, Mossford II 8-0, Hollingsbury 8-0 and Horsham 7-1.
Chloe was the only player to drop a set, and in a 1-3 defeat against Alex Forshaw from Horsham, she actually won 42 points to Alex's 38 points!
Tressa Sports Award Winner
Bournemouth Sports players continue to put the club on the map. Tressa Armitage has won the Junior Sportswoman of the Year at the presentation for the Winchester and District Sports Awards, an event sponsored by the University of Winchester. The Awards were presented by Andy Steggall who works for the BBC and Sky networks.
This year's awards were the biggest and best to date. Over 350 people were present throughout the evening across the three different ceremonies. Congratulations Tressa!
Success in Nationals
Considerable success was achieved by a group of Bournemouth Sports players at the National Junior Championships in Hatfield last weekend. Saturday was the Junior event and was something of a roller-coaster day for Tressa Armitage. Her doubles partner Emily Bates dropped out injured early in the day leaving Tressa with no chance of a medal in the event. In the singles she lost in the quarters to Vicky Smith. Even though carrying a slight ankle injury Tressa felt she had underperformed.
